When I was little I was outside constantly. Back then we weren’t real big on sunscreen.
As I got older, though, my Mother made sure I knew just how important it was to protect my skin from the harmful rays of the sun. At first I rebelled. All my friends had tans during the summer months and being a blue-green eyed blonde I was pale….think a white wall with eyes…that was me. I continued to do what I wanted (oh, teens!?!) but then my mother gently dropped the name of a close friend of hers. She asked if I ever noticed L’s skin. Well, at the time I couldn’t really think of anything that stuck out to me but the next time I saw her I took note and I was shocked. Her face had a hardened look and to be blunt, she had a lot of wrinkles especially when I compared her to my Mom. My Mom had hardly a wrinkle and even though they were only 2 years apart in age L looked at least 15 years older than my Mom. The difference, my Mom rarely spent time in the sun and when she did she always protected her skin and L always had a deep, dark tan, even in the dead of winter.
12 Summer Skin Tips
To keep yourself from being the example in anyone’s story about why it’s not good to tan here is a list of 12 Timeless Summer Skin Tips. ⇒Every morning after I wash my face I put on my skin care products for the day. I use RoC Deep Wrinkle Daily Moisturizer (with Sunscreen) and RoC Multi Correxion 5 in 1 Chest, Neck and Face Cream with Sunscreen which helps protect against future sun damage when used with other sun protection measures. Simply walking to and from your car or shopping at the farmer’s market your skin is exposed to the sun and you need to protect it and that’s why using products with built-in sunscreen is a must. I repeat this every night as well.
⇒Choose makeup with SPF. This will add another layer of protection to your face in addition to the products mentioned above.
⇒Cool off with a refreshing face mist – Place my floral infused witch hazel in a small spray bottle, chill it in the refrigerator and then spritz throughout the day.
⇒If you’re going to be in the sun for a prolonged period of time, spray your scalp along your hairline with a a sunscreen product with UV protection and an SPF of 30 or higher.
⇒Wear a wide brim hat
⇒Water, water, water. Drink plenty of water to keep your body, including your skin, hydrated.
⇒Your lips need protection, too. If you don’t regularly wear lipstick you should still protect your lips with a lip balm that has an SPF of 15 or higher.
⇒Use an exfoliating coffee scrub on dry skin before showering. The caffeine has firming properties and the coconut oil will help to keep your skin from drying out. ⇒After showering or bathing pat your skin dry and moisturize with an all-natural body butter. Concentrate on knees and elbows and any dry patches.
⇒Protect your hands with a hand cream that provides SPF coverage. The skin on the hands is one of the first places to show signs of aging.
⇒If you do get sunburn bounce back from sunburn with yogurt! Yes, yogurt. It contains lactic acid and helps to calm and sooth the skin. Put is on over any sunburned areas, leave in place for 30 minutes and then take a cool shower to rinse it off.
⇒Drink red wine – red wine contains Resveratol and has an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect and can help ease the discomfort associated with sun burns.
*Important! If you plan to be out for longer than just a brief period be sure to wear a strong sunscreen in addition to your standard skin care and to reapply it often!
