My Favorite Health Apps

A few weeks ago I had one of those revelation moments.  I need to take care of me.  My stress levels have been over the moon for more than 3 years now and most nights I couldn’t sleep and would find myself tossing and turning with my mind in overdrive.  I’ve had anxiety attacks for years now, especially when I’m shopping, but 3 years ago they started to happen at home.  If was almost as if there was no ‘safe’ place.  A light bulb clicked {a very welcome answer to prayer in my case} and I started to take a look at ways to take care of me without adding stress.  I started to just watch what I eat cutting down on processed foods and reaching for fresh fruit or veggies when I’m hungry.  I cut out almost all caffeine in the form of soda.  I still have an iced coffee or regular coffee almost every day but have 1 cup instead of 2 or 3 and thankfully, I noticed a change for the better in 3 days.

Even with those changes I was still not sleeping well and my heart was racing at night so I looked into a deep breathing app and found several but decided to download Breathe Away High Blood Pressure and while my husband and boys tease me about it, I found that after only 2 days my morning anxiety {my daily companion} was gone and sleeping at night was somewhat better.  There are several other apps I found as well while looking for breathing apps but since my father had high blood pressure related to stress, I decided to go with the one mentioned above.  It’s 15 minutes a day but when I’m done I feel as though I’ve had a massage…absolutely relaxed and renewed.

The next app I downloaded was the Calorie Counter & Diet Tracker by MyFitnessPal which is FREE!!! I can’t tell you how much I love this app.  I am not one for keeping track of what I eat by writing it down but this makes it so easy to record what I’m eating, including water consumption, and my workouts.  The food diary has a scanner so I can scan items like Luna Bars, peanut butter, bagels, and my favorite new drink, International Delight Iced Coffee, choose the serving size I’m having and enter that into my diary.  I look up calories for fruits, veggies, and items that don’t have bar codes on the Self Nutrition Data website.  Once I add a food it is kept in my log and if I have that food again, I just choose the previous entry and add that.  The app’s database also contains calorie and nutrition information for foods from dozens of national restaurant chains which makes eating out and staying on track easier than every.  MyFitnessPal is user-friendly with an easy to navigate interface.  I found that this really helps me to keep myself accountable.

I also started adding {or at least trying to add} four 10 minute walks daily to my regimen.  It’s been a little icy so that has not always been possible but walking through the mall or shopping center counts as long as I don’t stop to shop.  I just set the timer on my phone for 5 minutes and when it goes off, I turn around and head back to my starting point.

So far I’ve been steadily loosing weight and more importantly, feeling and sleeping much better.

  1. What neat changes you are making. I’m glad they are helping you and that you are seeing good changes. I had to reduce my caffeine as well due to heart palpitations. I also lost about 40 pounds 3 years ago and that has helped me feel great. I hope the changes continue to help you.
