My mom was such a good cook.  Most of her recipes were basic with few ingredients but they were always so tasty…..such Mom food.  Almost every recipe of hers {except for pan fried liver & onions and duck soup yuck!!! ~someday if I’m brave enough I may give you the duck soup details} were my favorites.  She was great at using fresh fruits or vegetables in season.  I was at the grocery store and saw some beautiful cabbage so pulled out Mom’s recipe to make this.  My two younger boys and my husband had never tasted it {I can’t believe I haven’t made it in over 11 years} so I was eager for them to have this.  I served it with some crock pot pork chops and mashed potatoes…tasty, tasty, tasty!

Mom’s Sweet & Sour Cabbage Recipe

one fresh head of cabbage

3 tablespoons of butter

1 tablespoon sugar

2 tablespoons vinegar

  1. Pull off outer cabbage leaves and discard.
  2. Chop cabbage cole slaw style and core ~ discard core.
  3. Place cabbage in a large pot and cover with water.  Cook for 30 minutes over medium high heat.  Do NOT boil.
  4. Drain water.
  5. Add butter, sugar and vinegar and stir well.  Cover with water and cook for an additional 30 minutes until cabbage is soft.  You may need to add more sugar or vinegar according to your preference.

Enjoy!

p.s.  Don’t you just love the bowl…that was my Mom’s also.  : )

One of my other favorite ‘Mom’ recipes is her Ham, Cabbage and Potatoes!
