Home Made Ornaments~Old Fashioned and Inexpensive

by mb on 12/04/2008

I like to give gifts and I like to make “stuff”.  I wanted to combine both and make something inexpensive yet giveable.  These ornaments are very easy and very inexpensive.  I bought styrofoam balls {3″}, two in a package at the Dollar Store and printed out a simple, colorful, Christmas holly pattern.

I then folded the paper in half lengthwise and cut away.  Next, using Mod Podge, I glued the paper to the styrofoam ball cutting notches at 1/4 inch intervals at the top and bottom and then adhering those areas gluing tightly.  The end result will NOT be smooth, but that is okay because we are going for an old-fashioned look.   Once the paper has been adhered fully to the styrofoam ball, I then brushed Mod Podge all over the ornament to seal the paper and give it a nice finish.  I used a matte finish for this project.

I did one half of the ornament at a time so that I could dry them and then turn over and do the other side.  I found placing the ornament across the top of a washed out jar was helpful.  Once totally dry, I added some ribbon and a button.  If the paper did not meet at the bottom you can glue a button there as well to give your ornament a finished look.  I also made some quick tags to hang on the ornaments and will personalize these when I decide who the recipients will be.  Rustic Christmas hugs, mb.

I posted this link over at The Inspired Room.  There are so many wonderful links over there right now…oh my!  So many links…I wish I could just browse all day…lots of great ideas for the Holidays!

I have a similar ornament I make with fabric that I shared on my blog. I use wire for a hanger and it is a great handle to use while covering the Styrofoam ball.
I’m having a giveaway ending Monday at midnight. Stop by to enter.
